I have many memories growing up that revolve around art. In grade school I had an assignment to write and illustrate a story book about my pet kitten and her adventures. And in high school, I wrote a book report about Texas, my birth state, with illustrations of the state map, state bird and state flower. I remember feeling it was important that the illustrations were accurate and enjoyed the task of making sure they were, to the best of my abilities. Looking back, I guess that explains my style of photo realistic painting, though I include a tiny whimsical touch in each painting. I truly like the challenge of making each painting look as real as I possibly can.
I attended Eastern Connecticut State College, and I earned a BA in Fine Art though I was working towards a Liberal Arts Degree. At the time there was no Fine Art degree offered, so I guess my art professors took it upon themselves. I was surprised and incredibly honored when my art professor requested one of my drawings for himself. Dr. Wolfe helped me realize there was some value to my work beyond my own enjoyment. I’ve worked from High School until retirement in 2019, dreaming of painting when I had time. In addition, I am an avid gardener, having planned and planted many gardens over my 40 years in East Haddam. I enjoy seeing the changes I’ve made to our landscape grow and bloom into my desired result. Once retired, I began painting from the many photographs of my gardens with acrylic on canvas, panels, and rocks. I also enjoy painting pet portraits and sewing jointed Fau Fur memory bears. My husband Steven, born in East Haddam, is a retired finish carpenter and makes the frames for my canvas paintings. I’m a member of the East Haddam Art League and the Lyme Art Association and hope to paint pet portraits on commission. I find peace in the details trying to capture light, shade, and dimension in my paintings. My style is evolving, and I feel the need to capture a more relaxed style as I progress. I'm looking forward to trying my hand at pastels, gouache, and watercolor. |
